Rentals

N171SF is available for rental through Illinois Aviation Academy located at the northeast corner of Dupage Airport (KPDA) in West Chicago, IL.

Flight time can be purchased for $210.50/hour (including fuel).

Rental pilots must hold at least a private pilot certificate.  Though insurance restrictions do not allow N171SF to be used for initial pilot training, it is perfect for use in attaining additional ratings such as instrument and commercial certificates, or just for the fun of flying.

Because N171SF has such advanced avionics unfamiliar to most pilots, before soloing in N171SF all pilots are required to complete the following training:

  • Pre-solo written exam for DA40-180 completed and corrected to 100%, with copy kept on file and original returned to pilot for reference.
  • Complete the viewing of the G1000 Training video.
  • G1000 Pilot’s Training Guide completed and corrected to 100%, with copy kept on file and original returned to pilot for reference.
  • For private pilots, at least 10 hours of total combined ground and in-flight checkout with an approved instructor.
  • For instrument rated pilots, at least 10 hours of total combined ground and in-flight checkout with an approved instructor including at least 3 hours of instrument training on the G1000.
  • For commercially rated pilots, same as instrument rated pilot except total checkout time must only be at least 5 hours.

The checkout training should include special emphasis on:

  • Preflight inspection and moving the aircraft on the ground (with and without the tow bar).
  • Checking the fuel level with external fuel gauge Parking brake usage.
  • Taxiing and steering with castering nose wheel. Basic operation of G1000 flight instruments.
  • Power settings for takeoff, climb-out, cruise, and descent.
  • Crosswind takeoffs, landings, and taxiing.
  • Leaning the mixture and the Lean Assist function of the G1000.
  • Flight planning functions of the G1000.
  • Fuel tank timers in the G1000.
  • G1000 failure modes and recovery.
  • Autopilot use and operation.
  • Topping fuel tanks after use and resetting G1000 fuel computer.
  • Securing aircraft with gust locks and various covers (pitot tube, stall indicator, etc.).
  • Securing aircraft at airports other than KDPA.
  • Cleaning aircraft after use.

In addition, for pilots intending to use plane under IFR:

  • G1000 use and operation for approaches.
  • Autopilot use and operation for approaches.
